HOT ISSUE 5/3/05- If you can not send email make sure you have checked the box "My Server requires Authentication". This does not apply to kernmail users.

In Outlook Express you go to Tools--Accounts--Mail--Properties--Servers-- then check the box in the lower left corner.

This is a required setting to curb SPAM on our Servers

Hi, I am David Rogers owner of Electronic Towne Crier.

First- lets me say that this Technical Support page is useless if you can't connect. With that in mind please print all support pages when you 1st signup, that way you can refer to them when you have an issue. If you do not have a copy and need help go to a friends house and print and review this complete document for assistance. If you call - listen to the auto-attendent for various options. If you know the option you want you do not have to listen to everything, just press the # you want. Please don't expect our Internet support or service to fix failing hardware or Windows Systems. If you have an old system (> 2 years) you might want to consider getting a newer one.

People always ask if we are down. It's a great question but is very seldom the case. Always review these steps before canceling or changing services because you can't connect: Also Call our office and press #3 for status of our systems and network.

1. To verify a # -Use your telephone and call the Internet access number for your town. Listen for a Fax type of computer answer or sound. This will verify the number is working.

2. ALWAYS dial from a shortcut on the Desktop -Never let I.E. or OUTLOOK EXPRESS dial for you. This will cover up the real connection problem. People will say their email does not work but its because they are not even connected.

3. If it appears your PASSWORD is rejected 1st try retyping the user name and password in ALL lower case letters and try dialing again. Many windows systems lose these values in the registry even though they appear correct on the dialing window. this is very common with XP.

Solution:

1. Go to Dial-Up Networking.

3. Enter Etcrier.net as the name of the connection.
4. Click Next and enter our access telephone # Click Next and click Finish.

5. To create a shortcut to your desktop left click on the Etcrier Dial icon and then right click on Create Shortcut.
6. (95,98)Left click on the Etcrier Dial icon that you just created and then right click on Properties.
7. (95,98)Click on the tab that says Server Types. Uncheck Logon to network, NetBEUI and IPX/SPX. Click OK.

8. Go to your desktop and double left click on the shortcut. (95,98)Now enter your User name and Password. Check Save Password if you want your computer to remember it all times.

Question: My modem is dialing but I can't seem to connect?
I get disconnected immediately after connecting?
The computer keeps asking me for my password?
I loaded AOL and now I can't get connected to ETCRIER?
Reason: Although there can be many answers to the above problems, 99% of the time your system has a failure in the TCP/IP networking program. This is caused by having networking products installed that conflict with TCP/IP. Also, if the computer dials the wrong number or gets no dial tone; this will also cause a TCP/IP error. Make sure there is NO area code in front of the number to call waiting codes if you do not have call waiting.

Solution: XP

Windows 95 & 98

you have a modem issue(reinstall) or a network issue(TCP/IP) Most of the time you will need to call our support line at 661-327-1172. Try this M/S fix DOWNLOAD and run.

Replace the TCP/IP software as follows:
Click START--> Settings--> Control Panel--> Networking.
Now remove all entries except Family Logon, Dialup Adapter. **

** If your system is on a network, check with your administrator, before doing this procedure. **

Add back TCP/IP as follows: Add--> Protocol--> Add--> Microsoft--> TCP/IP--> OK.
TCP/IP is now back in the window of installed components. We need to still change some settings: Click TCP/IP--> Properties--> (OK 98 only)--> DNS configuration--> Disable DNS--> Wins configuration--> Disable Wins resolution--> OK--> OK.
System will now reboot.
Some Window systems will get version errors at this point due to updates you have done that conflict with your reloaded software. This will in most situations not cause an error. Just answer Yes to each prompt until the system begins to reboot.

Summary: This procedure will, in almost every instance, correct these errors. A quicker solution that works 25% of the time is to just change the phone number. Windows will reset TCP/IP when you change the number on some systems. Call for access number in your area.
Question: I have a 56K modem but I am only connected at 26k or 28k.
Reason: The speed you are seeing is the DTE speed not the transmitting speed. DTE is the speed of your COM port. That is the speed from your modem to your computer. When you have a noisy connection or a remote location connection your DTE speed will be lower. Some modems have the ability to set the DTE speed to 115,200. This is the maximum speed of your COM port. For detailed information on 56k modem speed, go to www.modemsite.com
Solution: Put extra settings in the modem setup to fix the DTE COM port speed to 115,200. You can add &F to the Extra Settings in your modem setup window as follows: Click START--> Settings-- > Control Panel--> Modems. Click on Properties--> Connection--> Advanced. Type in &F in the Extra Settings box. Then click OK--> OK--> Close. Then Exit the Control Panel. This works for Most Modems. See www.modemsite.com for additional help on your particular modem.
Summary: If you are not a Technical person you might consider having your computer supplier do the changes for you.
Question: What are the email server names?
Solution: The name of the POP3 and SMTP servers are "etcrier.net"
Question: How do I set up my Outlook Express to receive Email?
Solution:

This is the proper set up for using Outlook Express with a dialup Internet connection:
Go to the Menu Bar on the top line in Outlook Express and select: Click Tools--Accounts--Mail Then enter
Name--next, email address--next, etcrier.net, etcrier.net--next,password--next--finish.

Click Properties-Servers--Check the box "My server requires authentication".

Click OK
Go to the Menu Bar on the top line in Outlook Express and select:
Tools-> Options

Apply the following to the items in the General Tab:
Check -- When starting, go directly to my "inbox" folder
Uncheck -- Notify me if there are any news newsgroups
Uncheck -- Automatically logon to MSN messenger
Uncheck -- Send and receive messages at startup
Uncheck -- Check for messages every xx minutes

Click on the Send Tab
Uncheck -- Send messages Immediately
Mail Sending format should be Plain Text

Click on the Connection Tab
Check -- Ask before switching dial-up connections
Uncheck -- Hang up after sending and receiving

When finished click OK.

These settings will allow you to read and write email without being connected to the internet. This will leave your telephone free to receive calls.

You only connect to the internet to actually transmit and receive your email. This will allow you to have a much nicer email experience.
